The Nutrition Label
This week I looked at a box of Quaker Oats Oatmeal. What I found was hopeful. The upside is there is 3 grams of dietary soluble fiber in each serving of oatmeal. That's pretty good and if we eat it more often than not, we're taking a step in the right direction. Besides other essential vitamins and minerals listed the only other suspicious ingredient I saw was caramel color and calcium carbonate. I don't fully remember what that is. Sorry. Guar gum I believe is an emulsifyer; we briefly spoke on it in class. Overall, this is a healthier food option then say a brownie topped with icecream. Although, that does sound good! As a believer in Nutrition, I think it is necessary to look at labels. The point is not to feel like we are denying ourselves of yummy things but to set ourselves up healthfully for the future. Otherwise, If we don't care to know what it is we're putting into our bodies, why do we even attempt to maintain them? Fiber is like the shower for our insides...I know that sounds strange but it's true. But if we take the time to wash our bodies and keep them clean, why not do the same for the places we cannot see. It is also true in many different areas of life. Any thoughts would be great!

Yummy, brownie topped with icecream! Sounds like my kind of desert! All joking aside, I don't really care for oatmeal, but I do agree, eatting more oatmeal would probably be benefical to anyone's health. Just remember, too much of a good thing can also be bad!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the oatmeal, although I can't eat it plain. I prefer the high fiber maple and brown sugar, yum! Fiber is so good for our bodies and helps cleanse our digestive track daily. I believe that everyone just needs to find a healthy balance so that every once in awhile we can indulge in our guilty pleasures!
ReplyDeleteI really liked your point of looking at one's body as an investment! I always start out on a positive "eat healthy" kick but... it is extremely hard when the college life is always on the go. When one stops to think about it, life will always be on the go! Good thoughts! Was the oatmeal plain?
ReplyDeleteYea, I think that the oat meal is pretty good for you overall. Me personally, I dont get super nit picky about all the ingredients that are in the things I eat. I usually just look to see if its healthy overall and then go for it!
ReplyDeleteLooking at the label is really important, even if you decide to eat something with bad ingredients, at least your taking some responsibility for it. Also, I am not a big fan of oatmeal...
ReplyDeleteUgh, a shower for our insides? Sounds tasty. I blame you for the indigestion I now feel, some two hours after eating a bowl of oatmeal.
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of hard to mess up oats though. So far I haven't been all that surprised with the snack foods we've looked at. I haven't seen anyone post anything truly horrible or misleading yet, like most of those organic cookies you find in stores that are loaded with sugar.
Oatmeal is one of my favorite foods. I dont buy the type that is flavored because I have heard that it doesn't have the same nutrients that regualr oatmeal has. Americans are lacking fiber in their diets...and oatmeal is a great way to get some fiber. I will not buy the foods that claim to have "EXTRA Fiber" because they are not complete fibers. I will try to eat veggies with fiber...go the natural way
